Advanced Directives in Indiana
Our firm has written a 50+ page manual for the Indiana Association for Home and Hospice Care, Inc., (IAHHC) that discusses all of the various advance directives available in Indiana and the legal requirements applicable to each. It initially covers the federal "Patient Self Determination Act" and consent to health care generally in Indiana. The manual then addresses appointment of health care representatives, disqualification of others to exercise substituted consent, expression of contrary wishes concerning patient care, living wills and life prolonging procedures declarations, durable health care powers of attorney, out of hospital DNR declarations and orders, and psychiatric advance directives. The advantages and disadvantages of the various advanced directives discussed are common questions concerning them. Although written primarily for home health agencies and hospices, it is a helpful resouce for any provider or individual interested in advance directives in Indiana.
